Corporate manslaughter charge results in jail sentence for Company Director
The Evening Standard reported this week on calls for new safety standards in construction, after a commercial director of a construction firm was convicted of manslaughter on grounds of gross negligence. A workman was crushed while working on a basement extension, due to the walls of the excavation being improperly supported. The Commercial Director was convicted on the basis that he had failed to ensure that the worker and his colleagues had been properly trained in basement excavations, which they had never worked on before despite extensive experience on construction. The judge said the site was an accident waiting to happen.
